Enable VoLTE
As carriers shut down their older networks, making sure you have VoLTE enabled is now a necessity and not an option. Without it, you’ll soon notice it becoming increasingly difficult to make and receive calls. That’s why we’re going to show you how to turn on VoLTE, but we’ll start by answering the most important question:
What is VoLTE? Device List: https://support.gtiglobalus.com/knowledgebase.php?article=186
VoLTE stands for Voice over LTE. For once, the tech guys have given us a straight-forward name. As the name suggests, this technology allows us to make mobile phone calls over modern LTE networks, resulting in clearer and more reliable connections than other older networks such as 3G. Turning on LTE/VoLTE requires you to turn on the cellular data setting on your phone. Don’t worry, VoLTE calls are still billed as minutes and will not generate any data usage. If you have a relatively modern 4G/LTE equipped phone, chances are it’s VoLTE capable. If it’s not turned on, though, your phone won’t be able to take advantage of this capability. To ensure your phone is future-proofed and ready for when VoLTE is a requirement, here’s how to turn on VoLTE (sometimes called HD Voice if you’re on a Verizon-supported network) depending on your phone type.
Enable VoLTE on iPhone/iOS Device
- Tap Settings.
- Tap Cellular.
- Ensure the Cellular Data switch is in the “on” position.
- Tap Cellular Data Options.
- Tap Voice & Data.
- Ensure 4G or LTE is selected (has a checkmark). If not, tap. It may even say ‘4G, VoLTE On’. Or, you may have a ‘5G Auto’ or ‘5G On’ option, we suggest choosing ‘5G Auto’ if 5G is included in your data plan.
- If there is a separate VoLTE slider, make sure it is in the “on” position.
These instructions are for the newest iPhone software. On older versions, the process to turn on VoLTE will be very similar.
Enable VoLTE on an Android
Depending on the specific Android device you are using, these steps may differ somewhat.
- Tap Settings.
- Tap Network & Internet (or Connections)
- Tap Call (or Cellular Networks, Mobile Network, or Mobile Data)
- Tap Preferred Network Type (or Network Mode)
- Select LTE and/or 5G (if your data plan includes 5G) and enable VoLTE / HD Voice / Enhanced Calling.
OR
- Go to the dial pad of your phone.
- Tap the 3 dots/menu in top right.
- Tap Call Settings.
- Tap to enable VoLTE / HD Voice / Enhanced calling.
Still no luck? The question “How do I activate VoLTE?” can be a bit harder to answer here due to the differences between different manufacturer operating systems. Here’s a very general version of the process to point you in the right direction. You’ll first go into Settings. The next selection is likely to be something along the lines of Cellular Networks, Call or Call Settings. At this point, look out for any option that mentions VoLTE or Voice over LTE.
If you run into any problems, a quick web search of your phone model and “VoLTE” should clear things up. And then you’re all set!
Upgrade to a VoLTE-ready phone
Let’s recap. “Should I have VoLTE on?” Definitely. “Can you teach me how to turn on VoLTE?” See above–and you’re welcome, friends. Unfortunately, if you’re using an older phone or a phone that uses older technology (e.g. 3G and even some older 4G phones), your device may not support VoLTE at all. To avoid inevitable service disruptions, you should upgrade your phone as soon as possible. If you’re wondering which phones support VoLTE, you’ll actually be hard-pressed to find a new phone that doesn’t.
If you’re purchasing a phone from Ting Mobile, you’re all set since all the phones we sell support VoLTE. You’ll find surprisingly affordable options that boast great features and will serve you well for years to come right in the Ting Shop. Some of our favorites are the Samsung A-Series and the unbelievably priced Motorola moto e, but there are many more options as well.
